We’ve all been there.
You’re having a conversation with a friend or coach about making a life change. They suggest a fresh approach or a new idea for personal transformation. And before you know it, out pop the words:
- “Yeah, but that won’t work for me.”
- “Yeah, but my situation’s different.”
- “Yeah, but I’ve already tried that.”
Sound familiar?
I call this a case of the “Yeah Buts.”
And trust me, they can feel very convincing. The “Yeah Buts” sound like your inner voice of reason. In reality, they’re like a lovely, ripe peach that looks juicy and delicious. But when you take a closer look, you realise it’s gone fuzzy around the edges. 🍑
The “Yeah Buts” promise safety and certainty, but what they really do is keep you stuck right where you are. They certainly don’t support you in making the personal transformation you yearn for.
Why We Reach for the “Yeah Buts”
The “Yeah Buts” are a form of self-protection. Life change is uncomfortable. Our brains are wired to prefer the familiar, even if the familiar isn’t serving us anymore. So instead of reaching for the juicy, unknown bite, we wrap ourselves in reasons why things won’t work.
The trouble is, those reasons don’t just protect us from disappointment. They also protect us from growth, joy, and possibility.
What If You Took a Bite Anyway?
Here’s a playful little experiment:
Next time you notice yourself reaching for a “Yeah But,” pause and flip it around.
Instead of:
➡️ “Yeah, but what if it doesn’t work?”
Try:
➡️ “What if it does?”
Instead of:
➡️ “Yeah, but that’s not for me.”
Try:
➡️ “What if it’s exactly what I need?”
That tiny shift from “Yeah but…” to “What if…” opens up space for curiosity and possibility. And that’s where the real sweetness lies.
The Juicy Takeaway
The “Yeah Buts” will always try to sneak in; they’re just part of being human. But you don’t have to let them steal your peach. 🍑
Next time they show up, smile at them, thank them for trying to keep you safe, and then ask yourself the juiciest question of all:
✨ “What if this could actually work for me?” ✨
Because life tastes a whole lot better when you give yourself permission to take a bite.
