I’ve recently been looking into the psychology of decluttering when everything feels meaningless.

It was prompted by the fact that my mum and I have recently been sorting through her house before she moves. We’ve been opening cupboards, drawers, and long-forgotten boxes. Some decisions are easy. Others feel surprisingly emotional.

Have you ever noticed how difficult it can be to decide what to keep when decluttering? It can also be challenging to decide what to let go of. What to keep and what to let go of when decluttering?

It’s not just about objects. It’s about memories, identity, and the stories we tell ourselves about our lives.

Our homes — and our hearts — hold layers of those stories. Some items remind us of joyful moments, lessons learned, and love shared. Others quietly pull us back into old pain, guilt, or “should haves.”

The truth is this: not every memory needs a permanent place in our lives.

When Memories Empower Us

Some memories feel light, expansive, and affirming.

These are the items that reconnect you to your strength, resilience, or joy.

We’re talking about:

  • A photo from a holiday where you laughed until your sides hurt
  • A handwritten note that still makes you smile
  • A small keepsake that reminds you of a proud moment

These objects support your sense of self and remind you of who you are at your best.

They deserve their place.

When Memories Keep Us Stuck

Other objects carry a very different emotional weight.

For example:

  • The dress you keep because you “used to fit into it”
  • A gift from a relationship that ended painfully
  • A box of belongings kept out of obligation rather than love

These items don’t empower you. Instead, they keep you tethered to old versions of yourself.

Sometimes we hold onto things because of guilt, nostalgia, or the feeling that we should. But if an object repeatedly triggers sadness, shame, or regret, it is time to ask a compassionate question:

Is this helping me move forward or keeping me stuck in the past?

How to Let Go Without Losing the Memory

Letting go of physical clutter doesn’t mean losing the meaning behind it. There are many ways to honour the memory while releasing the object.

Take a Photo First

Before letting the item go, take a picture of it. A digital memory album can preserve the feeling without taking up space.

Choose Symbolic Keepsakes

Instead of keeping an entire collection, choose one meaningful object that represents that chapter of your life.

Create a Ritual of Release

Write down what the object meant to you. Thank it for its place in your story. Then let it go. (Yes, Marie Kondo was onto something.)

Transform It

Repurpose fabric, jewellery, or other meaningful items into something new. Make sure it reflects the woman you are today. It doesn’t need to reflect who you used to be.

Decluttering Your Home and Your Heart

Memories are treasures when they remind us of how far we’ve come.

On the other hand, clutter is simply weight.

When we release the objects that no longer serve us, we create space in our homes. We also create space in our minds and emotions.

You deserve to feel light, free, and spacious in your life.

So the next time you’re deciding what to keep while decluttering, pause and ask yourself:

“Does this empower me… or does it keep me stuck?”

Your answer will guide you every time.
